It was like a scene from Final Destination. It looked so horrifying that it shouldn’t really happen at all. And to think that a kid could instantly lose his mother so fast is not the kind of thing that you really want to happen.

26th of July, 2015, AZG Mall, Jingzhou, China. Xiang Liujuan and her son Tongtong were just using an escalator, minding their own business, clueless to what will happen to them. For the first few moments of the clip, you could see Xiang (the woman in the white shirt and the black skirt) with her son rising up from on the escalator. Everything was pretty normal. But when they both reached the upper platform of the escalator, the most horrifying incident happened.

As both Xiang and Tongtong stepped on the metal pane on the platform, it collapsed. Xiang managed to push her son away from the sinking platform as she slowly disappeared inside the mechanism,

2 female employees, who were informed that the escalator had a problem, moments before the incident happened, were waiting at the platform. They were able to grab Tongtong away from the collapsing metal pane right after his mom pushed him away. They tried to pull Xiang away from the machine, but failed in the process.

According to some sources, Xiang was warned that the escalator was not working properly when she and her son were already halfway on their ride.

Firefighters quickly went into scene and led a 4-hour rescue mission to find the mother. Unfortunately, they already declared the woman dead after opening the escalator.

Investigations found out that the staff were already aware that the escalator was not functioning properly minutes before the horrifying incident happened, but they didn’t do anything about it. What’s worse is that local sources reported that the workers had forgotten to screw the panels after repairing the said escalator.

It’s not the first time that escalator incidents happened in China. One incident happened last year left 13 injured on Jing’an Temple Metro. In 2011, a 13-year-old boy was killed and 30 others were injured on Beiing Subway Line 4. In 2003, 10 were also injured on an escalator in Xinzhuang Station.
