Sometimes, you just need to open up your imagination and use your creativity to become one of the best musicians in the world. You may not know it, but a simple empty oil can could be your next guitar.
Weeseh Freeman, a self-taught musician and musical instrument maker from Monrovia, Liberia, is one of those people who overcame the boundaries of poverty for music. Instead of whining that he has no money for a good guitar, he maximized the available resources around him to make music.
Who could’ve thought that an empty oil can attached on a metal slab with wires attached on them could produce the same sound as your traditional guitar? And guess what, old man Weeseh could sing very well, too!
Out of all the people in the world, a simple guy from Liberia proved that if you really like music that much, you’d use every item in your surrounding just to produce one. And just like magic, his DIY guitar sounded like your ordinary wooden/electric guitar.
Some people may think creating your very own guitar out of an empty can is easy. But believe it or not, it doesn’t. Unlike your normal guitar, empty cans (especially those that were already used up) have uneven bodies which might produce uneven tone. However, Weeseh found a way to improve his own guitar to sound as smooth as possible.
Come to think of it, if Weeseh could create a wonderful instrument with such products, then it’s also possible that he could create other musical instruments such us drums, bass guitars(?), and who knows, he might also build his very own harmonica in the future.
Weeseh, keep rocking and creating beautiful music! We hope that music producers could discover you and your wonderful as both an instrument maker and a musician! Kudos!
